Truth Be Told.
Set in Greece during the Holocaust and then later, in America, Mitch Albom tell us this parable through the voice of Truth. Young Nico, his brother Sebastian, Frannie, the girl both brothers have an eye for, and Udo Graf, the Nazi soldier have lives that are intertwined. When the Nazis arrival and take the Jews away, Nico, an eleven year old boy is left alone. Nico only speaks the truth, and when he is forced by the Nazi soldier to help shepherd all the Jews onto the train and tell them they will be heading to safety, he believes it is true and complies. When he realizes the train is going to Auschwitz, he is crushed and changes his honest life by becoming a pathological liar, never to speak the truth again. He changes his name and location as he embarks on a lifelong search for forgiveness while he processes the repercussions of his lies and the damage he caused.
Mitch Albom’s incredible storytelling reminds us of the horrific inhumane acts committed by the Nazis and of and how easily innocent people can be deceived. He is a master of pulling at the heartstrings while teaching us about life, what it means to be a good person, and lies and consequences…along with giving us hope. This is a short book with a big punch and well worth the read!
